Cellulite is the abnormal storage of fat in the adipocytes (fat cells) in the hypodermis. The fat cells are grouped together into large collections, which are separated by fibrous strands. These fibrous strands run between the muscle and the skin. As the fat cells expand with weight gain, the gap between muscle and skin expands but unfortunately the fibrous strands cannot stretch. This results in the dimpling characteristic of cellulite. Who is affected by Cellulite?

Cellulite is that dimpled, cottage cheese appearance on the skin that affects 90% of all women. Cellulite is a fat cell. Different body areas are more likely to maintain and increase fat deposits than other areas. Fat cells in the skin are grouped around fibrous tissue that hold fat in place between the muscle and the skin. As fat cells expand due to weight gain, the fibrous tissue cannot stretch and support the skin. This tension pulls the fat cells together that begin to accumulate in size and number. The irregular dimpling occurs because of this "stretched" or defective fibrous layer, and thus, the fat protrudes into the dermis causing the irregular elevations and depressions. Even with effective weight loss and exercise, the defect in the fibrous tissue can not always be repaired.
The Accent Laser is the first body sculpting treatment to use both unipolar and bi-polar radiofrequency delivered with greater power and breadth of action to reduce the appearance of cellulite and fat. Radiofrequency produces heat to help destroy fat tissue and is currently used by other systems claiming to work on cellulite. The difference in the Radiofrequency used by the Accent is that it utilizes both uni-polar and bi-polar frequencies, which makes it more effective.
Bi-polar heat penetrates about 2-6mm deep in the skin for the superficial fat and the uni-polar heat penetrates up to 20mm deep in the skin for the deep fat. The Accent is the only technology available today that has this depth of penetration.
When the skin is penetrated by such concentrated heat, the skin temperature rises and the coiled layers of fibrous tissue holding the fat cells relax and unwind. The heat increases blood flow to the treated area, increases tissue metabolism and destruction of fat cells, increases lymphatic flow that is needed to remove the newly lysed fat cells, and also new collagen formation is stimulated. After four to six treatments, the treated area will appear tighter, firmer, and surrounded with less fat tissue. There are studies currently taking place to evaluate the change in tissue response to glucose and insulin. As fat tissue increases, so does the body's resistance to glucose and insulin. This is another research technique to show the effectiveness of this new technology.
